As promised, here is an update on FLASH the Wonder Beagle as well as some photos.

Flash came home Wednesday night (1/8) and was quite nervous. He of course used his super sniffing power to sniff away at every crevice available but was uninterested in food and only drank water while watching to make sure no one was going to “attack." We fashioned a bed for Flash out of an old queen bed mattress cover and a blanket.

He did enjoy his walks around the neighborhood but showed no interest in going into the fenced backyard. Later that night, we left Flash in the kitchen with a child gate up and went to bed – and for the first time he made some noise … he cried for about 45 minutes. Finally, we brought him upstairs and put his bed in front of ours – he lied down and didn’t stray all night.

Thursday Flash had an interesting day as he got to meet my three children (13, 14, and 17) when they came over for dinner. All were quite excited and Flash spent a good 45 minutes being scratched by my 14-year-old son. He had started to eat a little but not a lot and was still unsure.

Friday had a few setbacks. He had an accident – and it was clear he felt bad about it when we returned home. It also became clear that when we leave the house he jumps up on the sofa (he didn’t go near the furniture when we were home). Not a big deal as we fashioned a protective pad for him for the sofa.

Friday night had five high school seniors at the house watching hockey and yelling… Flash took it all in stride and was actually quite perky compared to previous days. All the boys liked Flash and spent a lot of time petting him – which he enjoyed.

The weekend – Flash had another accident but probably because we were gone and his calls to go outside were not heard by the kids. He took a liking to my 13-year-old daughter – hanging out with her for several hours in her bedroom. He got more comfortable as the weekend progressed and actually likes the fenced-in yard now.

Monday – Vet visit. Never fun. Turns out Flash gained about 3 lbs. while at Lollypop but frequent walks should assist with that. He got a shot and heartworm tablet. Vet is certain Flash is not a purebred beagle (we suspect he has some basset in him). The vet asked where we put Flash’s personality … but we are sure it is in there somewhere when the nervousness subsides.

Monday night we went to Petco and picked out a bed for Flash – at first he wasn’t sure about it but now it is his favorite spot to sleep. Monday night was the first night Flash seemed to look forward to eating.

Tuesday – Flash showed us a bit of his wild side – when we returned from work and let him out, he went into the backyard and ran around like a crazy dog which was great to see. He also chowed down as soon as his food hits his bowl and since has not been shy about eating.

Wednesday – We now have to open the shade so “Sir Flash” can look outside at his domain while we are gone. He loves sitting on the sofa looking out at the world .. and loves looking out the second-floor window at all that goes on. The freezing cold did not bother Flash during his walks – he loves to run around in the snow. He made it clear he would like a toy or two as he dug up a frozen turd in the yard and started playing with it – we did not allow him to bring his “toy” into the house.

We won’t bore you with more weekly updates… We’ll send another update after a month of Flash. He seems to be adjusting just fine. Milestones we are looking for:

*Would like to see him play with a ball
*Would like to hear him bark (yes … he has yet to bark and we heard him at Lollypop so he has the capacity. However, Sinbad is no longer his neighbor so the incentive appears to be gone for now)
*Would like to see him “smile”. While he has perked up he is still nervous.
Would like to have him give someone a kiss – he is getting lots of love but hasn’t returned any with a kiss.

More in a month ….
